In a capitalist society, our labor is our power. To wield our structural power to fight climate change, end imperialist wars and unjust occupation, and build a more equal and democratic society, we need unions to be strong, fighting, member-led institutions.

We are the Rank & File Project — a new generation of socialist activists joining the fight for a better world by organizing in the workplace and rebuilding a fighting labor movement.

What is the Rank & File School?

Our Rank & File School is for people who are committed to taking union jobs for the long haul and helping build unions into fighting, democratic institutions. We are training workers and activists who believe in the need to build a society that not only provides housing, health care, and a good quality of life to everyone, but is also free of capitalist exploitation.

The Rank & File School will provide education and support: about how to organize on the job, what union democracy and power look like, and how to pick a winning strategy to beat the boss. You will have the opportunity to learn from experienced mentors and work alongside your comrades as we learn together how to build our movement for a better world. We will also help you through the job application process and provide support once you are on the job.

The Rank & File School is a place to connect with and learn alongside activists across the country ready to change the world and help rebuild the labor movement. Participants will get:

• Mentorship: Learn from experienced mentors about what to expect from the job and workplace organizing.

• Education: Learn about labor struggles that have won, how to organize on the job, what union democracy and power look like, and how to pick a winning strategy.

• Support: Get support for the job application process and once you are on the job.

Where and when?

We are now accepting applications for our upcoming Rank & File School. The Rank & File Schools will begin between fall 2024 and winter 2024-25 (start date will vary by location). You should be prepared to meet in person a couple times a month in New York City, California's East Bay, or Philadelphia.

You should either have a job or be committed to getting one in one of our target industries. We can help you apply for jobs but can't guarantee one.
